Violent Video Games

Allan Schwartz, Ph.D. Weblog - March 9, 2010 - 11:00pm
We see the advertisements flash across our television screens. They are so realistic that at first the ads appear to be for upcoming movies. Instead, they are violent video games with characters that seem very real. These video games carry tags with them labelling them for "mature audiences only." However, research findings provide small comfort when they are examined. Essentially, the findings are that all audiences are deeply affected by these violent games regardless of age, nationality or ge

This past week the school board of one of the districts in New Hampshire fired its entire faculty because the schools have been under-performing for many years. President Obama applauded the school board for making and carrying out a courageous decision to improve the education of its children. All around the nation teachers, unions and others reacted angrily to what they considered to be an unfair action because among the teachers fired were those who performed on a very high level.

The Power Behind a Power Nap

Allan Schwartz, Ph.D. Weblog - March 4, 2010 - 11:00pm
Are you one of those who believe that an afternoon nap is laziness or for old and sick people? That seems to be our American attitude towards sleep. We work all day without a break except, perhaps, a brief lunch period. Then, we go to our next job and, for some of us, that is followed by a third job. We just push down the tiredness and keep on going. We believe the old watch commercial, "We take a licking but keep on ticking." The trouble is that we do not keep on ticking.

A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The...

Allan Schwartz, Ph.D. Weblog - February 18, 2010 - 11:00pm
Nothing in life is so very important that we need to rush. All of us rush around too much, convinced that what we are doing is so very important that we must get there fast. We rush to work, rush home, rush to the MD, speed on the highway to get there faster, rush through dinner to get to that crucial television program. When we are rushing we are not living in the moment. We are not practicing mindfulness. We are not caring for our minds and bodies.

The issue I have is with my 11 year old daughter. She is very jealous of every aspect of my relationship. She wants to know what we are talking about when he and I are having a conversation. She wants to know what he and I are doing when we are out on a date. We spend one night a weekend with her and allow her to invite a friend. We play board games, go bowling, to the movies, sporting events, dinner, all types of things and this was my boyfriend's idea. He wants things to be easier with her but

Adult ADHD, Some Additional Thoughts

Allan Schwartz, Ph.D. Weblog - February 16, 2010 - 11:00pm
There are some people who mistakenly believe that Adult ADHD is an excuse for bad behavior. They also believe that understanding the disorder makes excuses for it. Not at all. This is one of those disorders that people can learn to control or compensate for symptoms. For example, if one of the symptoms is forgetting important dates, such as anniversaries and birthday, the solution is to program either the computer, or cell phone to send reminders.

Marriage: I, You, We and, What's in a Pronoun?

Allan Schwartz, Ph.D. Weblog - February 10, 2010 - 11:00pm
What is in a pronoun? Apparently a very great deal according to research done at U.C.Berkeley. A study of 150 married couples was completed at U.C. Berkeley and published in the American Psychological Association journal, "Psychology and Aging." The couples were middle aged and older. The middle aged group had been married at least fifteen years and the older couples thirty years and more.

"I have suffered a great deal from writers who have quoted this or that sentence of mine either out of its context or in juxtaposition to some incongruous matter which quite distorted my meaning , or destroyed it altogether." Alfred North Whitehead English mathematician & philosopher (1861 - 1947)

The Stigma of Mental Illness Persists

Allan Schwartz, Ph.D. Weblog - February 4, 2010 - 11:00pm
All of us see the deluge of television, newspaper and magazine advertisements about depression and how it is relieved by the latest anti depressant medicines. Sociologists presumed that all of this consciousness raising done by these advertisements would help people shift their perceptions of mental illness being a moral weakness and something shameful to it being an illness similar to other illnesses that is now treatable by the medical establishment.
