Restraints and Seclusion are not necessary for children

Parents sometimes are told that a child needs to be restrained or put into seclusion while at school or while in a treatment program.  This is VERY RARELY necessary because Positive Behavior Support can prevent the need.   Avertive therapy is NOT a best practice and is not recommended for children and youth.

The attachment "IN THE NAME OF TREATMENT: A Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Child From the Use of Restraint, Aversive Interventions, and Seclusion"explains the rights of parents and children if this type of  "treatment" is suggested or done to a child.

In Alaska, contact AYFN at (907) 770-4979 or toll free (888) 770-4979 or the Disability Law Center at (800) 478-1234.

Parents can  tell their child's treatment center, school or school district that the use of mechanical or physical retraints is not authorized.  This should be done in writing.  A model letter is attached below.  Click on the title, download and edit the letter for your use.
