Special Education Service Agency

The mission of the Special Education Service Agency is to design and support education for Alaskan infants, children and young adults who experience low incidence disabilities. The agency promotes and supports education that:

  • is student, family and community centered,
  • is personally and culturally relevant and

To have children under 3 evaluated and tested for speech and language, intellectual functioning, physical development and therapy to assist in their development. In the Anchorage area contact Program for Infants and Children. In the Fairbanks area ACCA. A good child development checklist. NATIONAL DISSEMINATION CENTER for CHILDREN with DISABILITIES

NICHCY is an information and referal center that provides information on disabilities and disability-related issues Children and youth with disabilities (birth to age 22 )are our special focus.

Resiliency and Youth Development Program

The resiliancy youth development program focuses on cross-diciplinary strategies to prevent substance abuse,Tobacco,suicide,teen pregnancy,delinquency and school failure. The program emphasizes the posative qualities and behaviors needed for youth to become healthy,successful and responsable.

Educational Opportunity Center

In Anchorage or Mat-Su, the organization provides information and assistance for adults (ages 18 and older) to enroll in postsecondary education or traning programs: computer classes, tutorial information, information about entrance requirements and process, application assistance to schools or training beyond high school, assistance in finding scholarships and loans, career exploration and job market information. For high school students thee are two additional programs: Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound to assist students in preparing for college.

In the year 2002, an estimated 7.7 percent (plus or minus 0.2 percentage points) of civilian, non-institutionalized, men and women, aged 18-64 in the United States reported a disability. In other words, 13,474,000 out of 174,896,000 (or about one in 13) civilian, non-institutionalized, men and women, aged 18-64 in the United States reported a disability. The estimated percentage above is based on a sample of 128,588 persons who participated in the Current Population Survey (CPS).

Special Education Parent Resource Center - Anchorage

STeP is a part of the Anchorage School District. Is is a support for parents and teachers and has a large library on special education; the web-site has information about Special Education in the Anchorage School District and links to information about the law and other disability related topics; and a calendar of events and support groups. See the "Calendar of Events" for groups and trainings. Most are free to the public.
